Your skincare strategy against sun, wind and cold

We’ve all felt the toll that harsh weather takes on our skin. Whether you’re basking in summer sun or braving a blustery winter day, your skin faces daily battles against environmental factors.
These elements can strip moisture and leave you vulnerable to more severe skin issues if you’re not proactive. A well-thought-out skincare strategy can not only protect your skin but help it thrive, regardless of the conditions you’re up against.
Double down on high SPF
UV rays can cause damage even when it’s cloudy or chilly outside. This is why you need to use a broad-spectrum suncream with a high SPF every single day.
Aim for SPF 30 or higher, and choose a formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Don’t skimp on the amount: one teaspoon for your face, and more for your neck and décolletage.
Apply it generously 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re sweating or in direct sunlight.
Create a protective barrier
Environmental factors like wind and cold can lead to moisture loss, leaving your skin dry and irritated. To combat this, look for products that act as a protective shield.
Rich moisturisers with occlusive ingredients form a strong barrier. Be sure to choose a heavier face cream in the winter or during extreme conditions, which will create a thicker layer that locks in hydration.
Incorporating facial oils that are rich in fatty acids, like argan or jojoba oil, will not only nourish but help your skin resist environmental stressors. Don’t forget to protect your lips with a nourishing balm that can withstand the elements.
Focus on internal and external hydration
The harsher the weather, the more your skin will need moisture, so drink plenty of water throughout the day to hydrate from within.
If you’re on a ski holiday, the cold weather and high altitude can dehydrate your body and skin faster than you may realise. While you hydrate from the inside, apply moisturising products to reinforce the skin’s water retention.
Look for creams that contain humectants like glycerine or hyaluronic acid, which attract moisture from the environment and keep your skin plump. A rich serum or hydrating mask once or twice a week can nourish on those extra-dry days.
Gentle cleansing and calming recovery
After a long day exposed to the elements, your skin may feel tight and irritated. Cleansing is essential, but avoid harsh, drying products that strip away natural oils.
Use a mild cleanser that is free from sulphates and alcohol, as these ingredients can worsen dryness and sensitivity. Follow up with a soothing toner or essence to replenish the skin’s natural balance.
For recovery, opt for calming ingredients such as aloe vera or chamomile. These help to reduce redness, allowing your skin to repair itself overnight. Remember to avoid hot water when washing your face, as it can further strip your skin and exacerbate sensitivity.
