One of the perks of being a content creator is getting gifted opportunities. Not really items, but experiences like services, activities, and classes that my kids might not have tried otherwise. Recently, we were gifted one month of karate for two of my kids, and honestly, it has been such a great surprise. The best part is that the studio is within walking distance of our home. That means no bus fare, no rushing to find parking, and no extra costs added on top. It truly feels like a completely free opportunity, and as a mom of four, those are the kind of collaborations I appreciate the most.
Why We’re Loving Karate (& Why You Might, Too!)

Affordable Activities for Kids That Build Confidence
So far we have gone twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and both my ten-year-old daughter and my five-year-old son have already told me they love it. Watching them put on their uniforms and step onto the mat with big smiles has been really special. I can already see how proud they feel learning something new.
About the School
Groupe Karaté Sportif is a karate school network that has been around since 1992 and has grown a lot over the years. They now have over 45 locations across Québec with classes for kids, teens, adults, and families. You can find schools in many Montreal neighbourhoods like Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Anjou, Beaconsfield, Verdun, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, and more.
What I really like about the program is that it is not just about learning how to kick and punch. The foundation behind Groupe Karaté Sportif focuses on helping kids grow in so many areas of life. They talk a lot about confidence, discipline, respect, and managing emotions. The goal is to give children tools they can use at school, at home, and with friends. I love that the lessons go beyond the physical movements and really work on the whole child.
Karate has so many benefits for kids. Physically, it helps with balance, coordination, flexibility, and overall strength. My son especially has so much energy, and this gives him a positive place to use it. Mentally, karate teaches focus and self control. The kids learn to listen carefully, follow instructions, and keep trying even when something feels hard.
There are also social benefits. The classes encourage politeness, teamwork, and respect for others. The instructors are firm but kind, and they really make the kids feel capable. I think that feeling of belonging to a group and working toward goals together is so valuable.
What It Costs (If You Decide to Continue)
Since we were gifted a trial month, I wanted to give you a sense of what karate classes typically cost if you keep going (note: these figures are general averages, not specific to Groupe Karaté Sportif, since most dojos list pricing directly only after a trial or contact):
- Typical monthly classes for kids range roughly around $100-$150+ per month depending on location, class frequency, and program level
- Some schools offer introductory pricing or free trials before you commit
- Additional costs can sometimes include a uniform (gi) or testing fees, though some dojos include these with your membership
If you’re local to Montreal or Quebec, it’s always worth asking about:
- Family discounts
- Sibling pricing packages
- Introductory trial deals before signing up for full membership

For now, we are just enjoying the experience and seeing how the kids feel at the end of the month. But I have to say, this is exactly the kind of opportunity I love sharing with you. Something local, positive, and genuinely helpful for families.
If you have ever thought about karate for your own kids, I would really encourage you to try a class and see how they respond. I will keep you posted on how the rest of our month goes and whether we decide to make it part of our routine.

You know my kids are both black belts now. Payton is a second degree black belt. My husband is training for his black belt right now. He might hopefully get it in December. Anyways all that to say karate is an excellent sport. Both my kids were senseis and mentors and it gave them part time work and income as well. Hope they keep at it!
