I love shopping, especially during the holiday season. There is something about festive decor that makes me want to fill every corner of my home with twinkle lights and cozy touches. But as much as I enjoy browsing the aisles, I try to be very careful with overspending. With four kids and a long holiday list, every dollar counts, so I’ve learned to decorate in a way that feels magical without breaking my budget.
How I Decorate for the Holidays on a Budget

Check the Sales AFTER Christmas
One of my biggest tricks is buying holiday decor the day after Christmas. The sales are amazing and it is the perfect time to grab items for the following year. I usually pick up lights, wrapping paper, ornaments, and anything I know I will reuse. It feels like a gift to my future self when the next holiday season comes around.
Use what you already have!
I also start by using what I already have. Before I even think about buying something new, I pull out my bins and take a full inventory. Rearranging pieces can make old decor feel fresh again. A wreath can move to a different spot, a garland can shift to a new shelf, and ornaments can double as bowl fillers or table centerpieces.
Natural elements
Natural elements are another budget-friendly option I love. Pine branches, pinecones, cinnamon sticks, and dried oranges bring so much warmth to a space and cost very little. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also make the house smell festive.

Thrift it!
Thrift stores and second-hand finds are another secret to saving money. The thrift stores and church basements are busting at the seams with holiday decorations around this time of the year! Holiday mugs, candle holders, wall decor, and even artificial trees often end up there. With a quick clean or a minor DIY update, they look good as new. Don’t forget to check FB Marketplace as well.

Decorating for the holidays does not have to be expensive. It is about creating a space that feels joyful, warm, and full of memories. My kids do not care where the decor came from or how much it cost. They care about the feeling. And that is something you can create on any budget, with a little creativity and smart shopping.
