Hi friends! If you’ve just started creating content, you’ve probably heard the advice: fake it till you make it. Looking back after more than 13 years of blogging and creating content, I wish I hadn’t taken that advice so literally. I believed every opportunity was a good opportunity. If an email landed in my inbox, I said yes. If I got invited to a PR event, I RSVP’d. If a platform offered me a campaign, I accepted it without asking enough questions. At the time, I thought I was building my career. In reality, I was learning some expensive lessons. I don’t regret where I started because every mistake helped shape the creator I am today. But if you’re just beginning, maybe my experience can save you a little time, money, and frustration. Today I’m sharing 7 mistakes I made when I first started. Hopefully these will help you avoid them as well!
7 Mistakes I Made as a New Content Creator (So You Don’t Have To)

Hate to say it, but I think a lot of those early influencer platforms preyed on creators like me who were just excited to get opportunities. My old blog posts are proof of that. Sometimes I want to go back and delete every single one of those posts. I still might. lol
1. I Said Yes to Every Collaboration
One of my biggest mistakes was believing that every collaboration would lead to something bigger. Some of those early influencer platforms were built around volume. If you’re an OG blogger/creator, you probably know which ones I mean! They knew that new creators were eager to gain experience, so they offered campaigns that paid next to nothing. I remember accepting $5 to develop a recipe featuring a vegan protein powder that honestly tasted terrible. I promoted an ebook I couldn’t even finish reading. There were products I never would have recommended to a friend, yet I convinced myself they were “good opportunities.” Looking back, many of those blog posts make me cringe.
The lesson?
Just because someone offers you work doesn’t mean it’s worth accepting.
2. I Confused Free Products With Business Growth
The creator space has changed so much since I started, and I know it will continue to evolve. Some changes have been amazing, while others have made things more complicated for creators. But one thing remains the same: building a sustainable creator business takes more than just creating good content.
It takes learning how to value your work, building real relationships, understanding your audience, diversifying your income, and being intentional about the opportunities you accept. I wish I could go back and give my younger creator self this advice. I would tell myself to slow down, trust my instincts more, and stop feeling like every opportunity was my last chance.
I share more lessons I’ve learned over a decade in the industry, including brand partnerships, pitching, content strategy, and the behind-the-scenes realities of being a creator. You can read more of my content creation tips and resources (here).
