As a mom of four, life can get busy. Between school, meal planning, and trying to keep the house somewhat organized, it’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle. That’s why I’ve started making a conscious effort to plan one-on-one dates with each of my kids, and honestly, it’s been such a game-changer for our connection.
The Importance of Spending One-on-One Time with Your Child

Last year (pre baby) I had a solo date with my daughter, and we went out to eat at Duc de Loraine here in Montreal. Just the two of us, enjoying some delicious food, chatting, and giggling without interruption, it felt so special. These moments remind me why carving out this time matters so much.
Here’s why one-on-one time with your child is so important, plus a few fun ideas for your next “date.”
1. It Strengthens Your Bond
When it’s just you and your child, they really open up. I find my kids are way more talkative when they don’t have to compete with siblings for attention. These dates give them space to share what’s on their mind, their wins, worries, and funny little stories. It’s a chance to connect on a deeper level and make them feel seen and heard.
2. It Boosts Their Confidence
Spending intentional time with each child makes them feel special and valued. Whether it’s praising them for something they’ve done or just enjoying their company, that focused attention does wonders for their self-esteem.
3. It Supports Their Emotional Growth
These one-on-one moments give you a front-row seat to what’s going on in their world, emotionally, socially, and even academically. You can guide them through challenges, teach life skills (like ordering their own meal at a café!), and model healthy ways to communicate.

Fun One-on-One Date Ideas
- Go Out for a Treat: Try a local café, bistro, or bakery. Sharing a meal just the two of you is so simple but so special.
- Get Creative Together: Paint, craft, bake, or even try a fun DIY project.
- Have a Nature Day: Go for a walk, bike ride, or scavenger hunt at the park.
- Cozy Reading Time: Build a little reading nook at home or take a trip to the library.
- Mini Adventures: Explore a new neighborhood, try a new food, or go on a little “mom-and-me” shopping trip.

Life moves fast, but our kids are only little for such a short time. Taking them on solo dates, whether it’s a fancy brunch or just grabbing smoothies together, creates memories they’ll hold onto forever. Our date at Duc de Loraine wasn’t anything elaborate, but it was exactly what we both needed: quality time, good food, and lots of laughs.
I’m way overdue for some one-on-one time with my kiddos. Do you plan solo dates with your kids? I’d love to hear your favorite activities. Share them in the comments!
