Cheryl Tweedy

After welcoming her child with Liam Payne, Cheryl sparked speculation in 2017 when she debuted a gold band on her right ring finger. Reports at the time suggested it was a pre-engagement promise ring, representing the couple’s commitment without an official proposal.

Compared to the larger, more elaborate rings she’d worn in the past, this one was understated, a choice that reflected the private nature of their relationship at the time. They remained committed to each other in the years afterwards, and despite splitting up, they lived minutes away from each other for years after.

Selena Gomez

In 2012, Selena Gomez caught attention when she was photographed wearing a diamond-encrusted ring featuring the letter “J,” a nod to her then-boyfriend, Justin Bieber. The piece set off a wave of similar designs across Hollywood, with many couples opting for personalised rings.

Selena has since moved on and is now engaged to producer Benny Blanco, previously sporting a custom diamond ring adorned with the letter “B” in his honor. She later sold the ring on her website as part of a giveaway celebrating their joint album release.

Liam Hemsworth

While his relationship with Miley Cyrus ultimately didn’t lead to marriage, Liam Hemsworth made headlines in 2017 when he wore a gold promise ring on his left ring finger. At the time, it fueled wedding rumors, but the actor was clear that the band was a personal symbol of his commitment rather than a formal engagement.

Miley’s mother, Tish, said earlier that year that the couple didn’t have plans to get married, but were happy together and living in Malibu. They later went on to marry in 2018 in a private ceremony at their Nashville home.

FKA Twigs

Singer-songwriter FKA twigs also made the promise ring gesture public when she received one from her then-boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, in 2015. The thin gold band was a quiet, significant statement of their relationship at the time, serving as a precursor to their later engagement.

Interestingly, Pattinson had also given his ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart a promise ring back in 2011, showing his affinity for the tradition. Today, he is engaged to Suki Waterhouse, with whom he shares a daughter, while FKA Twigs is in a relationship with photographer Jordan Hemingway.
